This wonderful little video from Lee and Satchi at CommonCraft explains it very simply:

What it doesn’t explain, and what you really have to find out by plunging in, is how it can expand reporters’ options for connecting with readers, peers and sources, for keeping up with developments on their beats, and for sharing work before and after it’s published.

Another tool in the kit, and a good one.
