John Hassell blogs about online news at theexplodingnewsroom.com and serves as the administrator of a related Facebook group — also, conveniently enough, called The Exploding Newsroom. (If you’re really a glutton for this stuff, there’s an Exploding Newsroom Friendfeed room; there’s also an Exploding Newsroom channel at Kyte.tv, and you’re invited to contribute.) He is the online editor at The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., where he works with an incredibly talented bunch of people at the newspaper and its affiliated Web site, NJ.com. For all the boring bio stuff, you can check his public profile at LinkedIn. He also welcomes friend invites at Facebook and followers at Twitter, and he offers a shared items feed from Google Reader, where he consumes more than the daily FDA allowance of media and tech news.

Newsrooms across the country are exploding. Staffs are shrinking, there’s less space for news in the paper, and managers everywhere are cutting costs wherever they can. At the same time, new technology allows us to reach more people in more ways than ever before — and to work with people in our communities in ways we couldn’t have imagined just a very short time ago. How will all of this shake out? There are a lot of very smart people working on that, and this blog will sample and share their ideas while also chronicling the online adventures of the crew here at The Star-Ledger. The goal is a conversation about where we’re headed and how we can get there — together.
